Am I eligible for Mounjaro in Ireland?
Eligibility for Mounjaro® (Tirzepatide) must be determined by an IMC-registered doctor. It is a prescription-only medication, and its prescription is governed by strict clinical guidelines to ensure it is used safely and for the correct patient group.
A doctor will conduct a full health assessment. Here are the general criteria they will use.
The BMI and Health Criteria
Mounjaro can be prescribed for weight management if you meet one of the following criteria:
- A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or more (the clinical definition of obesity).
- A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 27 kg/m² or more (defined as overweight) in the presence of at least one specific weight-related health condition.
Understanding "Weight-Related Conditions"
This is a key part of the criteria. If your BMI is between 27 and 30, your doctor will check if you also have a related medical issue, such as:
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- High cholesterol (dyslipidaemia)
- Pre-diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
Who Is Not Eligible for Mounjaro? (Contraindications)
Just as important as who qualifies, is who cannot safely take this medication. A core part of your doctor's assessment is screening for these contraindications. For a comprehensive guide to contraindications, see our detailed post on who can't take Mounjaro.
You should not take Mounjaro if you:
- Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC).
- Have a history of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
- Have a history of pancreatitis.
- Have a known severe allergy to Tirzepatide.
- Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
Your Doctor Makes the Final Assessment
While these guidelines provide a framework, your doctor makes the final decision. They will review your full medical history, your current health, and any other medications you are taking. This is the only way to determine if Mounjaro is a safe and appropriate treatment option for your specific needs.
The Bua Health & MedicOnline Assessment
The Bua Health programme, delivered by our clinical partners MedicOnline, offers a thorough, safe, and efficient process for starting this journey.
Our secure online platform allows you to submit your detailed medical history for review. An IMC-registered doctor will assess your eligibility in a timely manner.
This efficiency does not compromise safety. Our "quality-first" approach means every assessment is reviewed personally by a specialist, IMC-registered doctor. Your full medical history is checked against the strict clinical criteria and contraindications before any medication is ever considered. This commitment to clinical quality is the foundation of our service.
