Short answer: yes, your GP can prescribe Wegovy in Ireland. But whether they will - and whether that is the most straightforward route to treatment - is a different question entirely.

Since Wegovy became formally available in Ireland in March 2025, one of the most common questions patients ask is whether they can simply go to their GP and get a prescription. It is a reasonable assumption - your GP manages most of your healthcare, so why not this? The reality is a little more nuanced, and understanding it could save you a lot of time and uncertainty.

Yes - GPs Can Prescribe Wegovy

Wegovy is a licensed prescription medicine in Ireland, approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Any IMC-registered doctor - including your GP - is legally entitled to prescribe it, provided you meet the clinical eligibility criteria.

Those criteria, as set out in the EMA Summary of Product Characteristics for Wegovy, are:

  • A BMI of 30 kg/m2 or above
  • A BMI of 27-29.9 kg/m2 with at least one weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, or cardiovascular disease

If you meet these criteria, a GP can assess your suitability, issue a private prescription, and you can collect the medication from a pharmacy. The prescription is private - Wegovy is not currently reimbursed by the HSE or covered under the Drugs Payment Scheme for weight management as of 2026.

But Here Is What Often Happens in Practice

Familiarity varies: GLP-1 medications for weight management are relatively new to Irish primary care. Not all GPs have experience with semaglutide for obesity, the dose escalation schedule, or the monitoring protocols involved. Some GPs may be comfortable prescribing; others may prefer to refer you to a specialist.

Appointment time is limited: A thorough assessment for Wegovy - covering your BMI, medical history, current medications, contraindications, and treatment goals - takes meaningful time. Standard GP appointments in Ireland are typically 10-15 minutes, which can make a comprehensive initial consultation difficult to complete in a single visit.

Ongoing support is not guaranteed: Wegovy requires dose escalation over 16-20 weeks, regular monitoring, and ideally concurrent lifestyle support. This kind of structured follow-up sits outside what most GPs can realistically provide within the constraints of a busy practice.

There is no HSE pathway for most patients: Because Wegovy is not reimbursed for weight management under the HSE, your GP cannot prescribe it on a medical card or through the Drugs Payment Scheme. It must be issued as a private prescription, and you pay the full cost of the medication at pharmacy.

This is not a criticism of GPs - it reflects current service structure in Ireland, not doctor capability.

Pricing and Service Model

Private GP visits can often cost around €70-€100 per visit, especially where follow-up is needed across multiple appointments. Specialised services, like Bua Health's weight loss service, can be available from €50 because they are dedicated to structured weight-management pathways.

What About HSE Referrals?

For patients with more complex obesity - typically a BMI above 40, or above 35 with significant comorbidities - your GP can refer you to an HSE specialist weight management service or endocrinology clinic. In these settings, GLP-1 treatment may be initiated and monitored by a specialist team. However, waiting lists for these services can be lengthy, and Wegovy itself is not currently reimbursed through the HSE pathway for weight management.

For most patients seeking access to Wegovy in Ireland in 2026, the realistic options are a GP private prescription or a dedicated private weight management service - with the latter offering more structured support around the same medication cost.
