If you have been researching weight loss injections in Ireland, you have probably found plenty of information about how they work and who qualifies. What is harder to find is a straight answer about what they actually cost.

That is what this guide is for. We break down the real cost of the main treatments available in Ireland, explain what is and is not covered by the State, and show you how to reduce your annual spend by up to 20% through tax relief.

Why Prices Vary So Much

There is no single price for any of these medications in Ireland. Three things determine what you actually pay each month:

The medication itself. Each drug has a different wholesale cost set by the manufacturer. Mounjaro and Wegovy are priced differently, and Saxenda sits in its own bracket.

The dose you are on. Mounjaro in particular gets more expensive as your dose increases. Wegovy pricing is more consistent across the dose range.

Which pharmacy you use. Pharmacies set their own dispensing margins. The same pen can cost meaningfully different amounts at two pharmacies on the same street. This is why shopping around - or using a service with negotiated pricing - matters.

What Each Medication Costs at the Pharmacy

The table below shows indicative monthly medication costs across the three licensed weight loss treatments in Ireland. These are pharmacy costs only and do not include any consultation or programme fee.

A note on Saxenda: Bua Health offers Mounjaro and Wegovy as treatment options. Saxenda (liraglutide) is included in this comparison for context, as it is the third licensed weight loss injection in Ireland. It requires a daily injection rather than weekly, and clinical trials showed lower average weight loss compared to both Mounjaro and Wegovy. It is the only weight loss medication currently eligible for partial HSE reimbursement (under strict criteria).

Mounjaro: Cost by Dose

Mounjaro has the widest price range of the three because the cost scales with the dose. You start at 2.5mg and titrate upward over several months. Not everyone needs to reach the highest doses - your doctor will find the level where you are getting good results with manageable side effects.

Eli Lilly increased the list price in September 2025, so older figures you may have seen elsewhere are out of date.

Mounjaro showed the highest average weight loss of the three medications in clinical trials - up to 22.5% of body weight in the SURMOUNT-1 study. Wegovy: Cost Breakdown

Wegovy pricing is more straightforward than Mounjaro. The cost is more consistent across the dose range, making it easier to budget for.

Monthly pharmacy costs in Ireland typically fall between €170 and €250, depending on the dose and pharmacy. Wegovy uses a 16-week titration schedule building from 0.25mg up to the 2.4mg maintenance dose. Costs at the lower titration doses may be at the bottom of this range.

Wegovy became available in Ireland in March 2025. It is the only semaglutide product formally licensed for weight management - Ozempic, which contains the same active ingredient, is licensed for type 2 diabetes only. The Other Cost: Clinical Support

The medication price is only half the picture. You also need a doctor to assess you, prescribe, monitor your progress, adjust doses, and manage any side effects. How much that costs depends on the route you take.

Through your GP: A standard GP visit in Ireland costs €50 to €70. During the first few months on treatment, you will likely need monthly appointments for dose changes and safety checks. That is €50-70 per visit, without any dietitian support, without between-visit messaging, and without specialist weight management expertise. Over six months, GP visits alone could total €300-420 - and if you want dietary guidance, a private dietitian referral adds €60-100 per session on top of that.

Is Any of This Covered by the HSE?

As of mid-2026, the picture is limited:

Saxenda is the only weight loss medication partially reimbursed under State schemes, and only under a strict Managed Access Protocol for patients meeting very specific criteria (BMI 35+, prediabetes, elevated cardiovascular risk).

Mounjaro and Wegovy are not currently reimbursed for weight management. NCPE assessments are ongoing, with decisions expected during 2026. If reimbursement is approved, it would significantly change the cost landscape for Irish patients.

For now, the vast majority of patients pay privately. Tax relief is the most practical way to bring costs down.

So Which One Offers the Best Value?

It depends on what "value" means for your situation.

Wegovy is the most affordable at maintenance doses (€170-250/month) and has strong clinical data behind it, including proven cardiovascular benefits from the SELECT trial.

Mounjaro costs more (€200-600/month depending on dose) but has shown the greatest average weight loss in clinical trials. For some patients, the extra cost may be justified by stronger results.
