Most people paying privately for weight loss treatment in Ireland do not realise they can claim 20% of it back from Revenue. That is not a special scheme or a loophole. It is the standard medical expenses tax credit, and it applies to both your consultation fees and your medication costs.

Over a year of treatment, that 20% can add up to €800 or more back in your pocket. Over two years, you could be looking at close to €2,000. And the process takes about ten minutes online.

This guide walks you through exactly what qualifies, how to claim, and the specific rules that apply to weight loss treatment in Ireland.

What Qualifies for Tax Relief

Under the Irish tax system, you can claim relief on health expenses that are prescribed or carried out by a qualified medical practitioner. For weight loss treatment, this covers two main categories.

Doctor consultations. Fees paid for medical consultations - whether in-person GP visits or telehealth consultations - qualify as long as the doctor is registered with the Irish Medical Council (IMC) or an equivalent body in another country. This includes your initial assessment, ongoing reviews, and any consultations related to dose management or side effects.

Prescription medication. The cost of medication prescribed by a registered doctor and dispensed by a licensed pharmacy qualifies for relief. This covers Mounjaro, Wegovy, and any other prescription medication you are taking as part of your treatment. Over-the-counter supplements, meal replacements, or weight loss products that are not prescription medicines do not qualify.

What does not qualify: gym memberships, fitness classes, health food purchases, non-prescription supplements, or any product that is not a prescribed medicine or a consultation with a registered practitioner.

How Much Do You Get Back?

Tax relief on medical expenses is given at the standard rate of 20%. There is no minimum threshold - you can claim from the first euro you spend.

Here are three worked examples based on typical treatment scenarios.

Tax relief examples

Wegovy + Bua programme (mid dose)

Monthly: €220 medication + €50 support = €270

Annual: €3,240

20% tax relief: €648 back

Mounjaro + Bua programme (mid dose)

Monthly: €350 medication + €50 support = €400

Annual: €4,800

20% tax relief: €960 back

Mounjaro + Bua programme (higher dose)

Monthly: €500 medication + €50 support = €550

Annual: €6,600

20% tax relief: €1,320 back

These figures assume 12 months of treatment. Your actual costs will depend on your medication, dose, and pharmacy. The point is that the relief is significant at every level, and most people are not claiming it.

How to Claim: Step by Step

There are two ways to claim medical expenses tax relief. The online route through Revenue's myAccount is by far the easiest.

Option 1: Online through myAccount (recommended)

  • Log in to Revenue's myAccount at revenue.ie. If you do not have an account, you can register using your PPS number and a verified MyGovID.
  • Go to "Review your tax" and select the relevant tax year. You can claim for the current year or for any of the previous four years.
  • Under "Tax Credits and Reliefs," select "Health" and then "Health Expenses."
  • Enter your total qualifying health expenses for the year. You do not need to upload receipts at this stage, but you must keep them for six years in case Revenue asks for them.
  • Submit your claim. If you are a PAYE worker, the credit will be applied to your tax for the current year or refunded for a previous year. Processing usually takes a few weeks.

Option 2: Paper form (Med 1)

You can download the Med 1 form from revenue.ie, complete it by hand, and post it to your local Revenue office. This works the same way but takes longer to process.

What receipts to keep

Keep every receipt from your pharmacy showing the medication name, quantity, and amount paid. Keep every receipt or invoice from your consultation provider (Bua Health, your GP, or any other registered practitioner). Store them digitally if that is easier - a photo on your phone is fine as long as the details are legible.

Revenue can request receipts for up to six years after you claim, so do not throw them away.

Can You Claim Through Health Insurance Instead?

Private health insurance in Ireland generally does not cover weight loss medication or the consultations associated with medical weight management. Some plans may cover a portion of GP consultation fees, but the medication itself is almost never included.

You cannot claim tax relief on expenses that have already been reimbursed by insurance. But since most weight loss treatment costs are paid entirely out of pocket, the full amount usually qualifies for the 20% relief.

If part of your costs are covered by insurance and part are not, you claim relief only on the portion you paid yourself.

Common Questions

Can I claim for previous years? Yes. You can claim medical expenses tax relief for any of the previous four tax years. If you started treatment in 2025 and did not claim, you can still submit a claim for that year now.

Do I need to claim separately from my partner? Medical expenses can be claimed by either spouse or civil partner, regardless of who paid. If one partner is on a higher tax band, it may be slightly more efficient for them to submit the claim, though the relief itself is always at the standard 20% rate.

What if I pay monthly through Bua? Each monthly payment for the Bua programme qualifies. Your annual total is simply 12 times your monthly fee. We can provide a summary of your payments for the year if you need one for your records.

Does the medication need to be for a specific condition? The medication needs to be prescribed by a registered doctor for a medical purpose. Weight management treatment prescribed by an IMC-registered doctor for a patient who meets clinical criteria qualifies. This is not cosmetic - obesity is a recognised medical condition, and the treatments are clinically indicated.

Why Most People Do Not Claim

The honest answer is that most people simply do not know they can. Medical weight management is relatively new in Ireland, and many patients are not aware that their monthly medication and consultation costs are tax-deductible in the same way that any other medical expense would be.

Others assume the process is complicated. It is not. If you can log in to Revenue's myAccount and fill in a few fields, you can have your money back within weeks.

If you are currently on treatment and have not been claiming, go back through your receipts for this year and any previous years. The money is there. You just need to ask for it.

For a more detailed breakdown of how the relief applies to specific treatment costs, see our dedicated tax relief guide. And if you are considering treatment and want to factor the tax relief into your budgeting, our guide to Wegovy eligibility and costs in Ireland includes worked cost examples, and our Mounjaro cost breakdown for 2026 covers Mounjaro-specific pricing.

If you are thinking about starting treatment, you can check your eligibility online in under 4 minutes. Treatment is subject to clinical assessment by an IMC-registered doctor, and a prescription is not guaranteed. If you are not eligible, you receive a full refund of your programme fee.
