The Wegovy Pill Has Been Approved in Europe: What This Means for Irish Patients

On 15 July 2026, the European Commission granted marketing authorisation for the Wegovy pill (once-daily oral semaglutide 25mg) for weight management across all EU member states. This follows a positive CHMP opinion in May 2026 and makes the Wegovy pill the first oral GLP-1 medication approved for weight management in Europe.
This is a significant moment for Irish patients. But EU approval does not mean Irish pharmacies will have it on shelves tomorrow. Here is what we know, what we do not know yet, and what you should be doing right now.
What Has Actually Been Approved
The European Commission has authorised oral semaglutide 25mg, taken once daily, for adults with obesity (BMI of 30 or above) or overweight (BMI of 27 or above) with at least one weight-related health condition. The approved label also includes cardiovascular outcomes data from the SELECT trial, showing that semaglutide reduces the risk of major cardiovascular events.
The pill contains the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection - semaglutide. It works through the same mechanism. The difference is the delivery: a daily tablet instead of a weekly injection.
One important detail from the approval: the Wegovy pill label carries no drug-drug interaction restrictions, which means there are no limitations on taking it alongside other medications. Novo Nordisk has highlighted this as a practical advantage for patients who take multiple medicines.
At the same time, the European Commission also approved a higher-dose Wegovy 7.2mg injection delivered through a single-dose pen, which showed average weight loss of approximately 20.7% in trials.
How Effective Is the Pill?
The Wegovy pill was studied in the OASIS clinical trial programme. In the OASIS 4 trial, adults with obesity or overweight who took the 25mg pill once daily achieved a mean weight reduction of 16.6% when treatment was adhered to. One in three participants achieved 20% or greater weight loss.
These results are comparable to what the injectable Wegovy achieves. The STEP 1 trial showed 15-17% average weight loss with the injection over 68 weeks. The side-effect profile is also consistent - mostly gastrointestinal effects (nausea, constipation, diarrhoea) that tend to ease as the body adjusts.
In practical terms: the pill delivers similar results to the injection, without a needle.
When Will Irish Pharmacies Have It?
This is the question everyone is asking, and the honest answer is that a precise date is not confirmed yet.
Here is what we know about the path from EU approval to an Irish patient filling a prescription:
Done · EU marketing authorisation
The European Commission decision applies across all EU member states, including Ireland. There is no separate Irish regulatory approval needed from the HPRA for the marketing authorisation itself.
Next · HPRA listing and distribution
The HPRA will list the product on the Irish register of authorised medicines. Novo Nordisk then needs to establish supply and distribution to Irish pharmacies and wholesalers.
H2 2026 · Novo Nordisk's stated timeline
In their announcement, Novo Nordisk said they are "committed to launching Wegovy pill in more countries in the second half of 2026." The pill is already available in the US, UK, and UAE.
Manufacturing · Athlone investment
Novo Nordisk has committed €432 million to upgrade its Athlone facility specifically to manufacture the oral Wegovy pill for markets outside the US. This is a significant investment in Irish-based production, though the facility is not expected to be fully operational until 2027-2028. Initial EU supply may come from other manufacturing sites.
TBD · Pricing and reimbursement
Pricing for the Irish market has not been confirmed. The pill will almost certainly be available on private prescription initially, as neither the injectable Wegovy nor Mounjaro is currently reimbursed by the HSE for weight management.
Our best estimate for when an Irish patient could realistically fill a prescription for the Wegovy pill is late 2026 to early 2027. We will update this post as specific Irish launch details are confirmed.
Should You Wait for the Pill?
This is the most important question, and the answer depends on your individual situation.
If you are eligible for weight loss treatment now and your health would benefit from starting, the injectable Wegovy is available today in Ireland. The clinical results are essentially the same as the pill. Waiting several more months for a tablet version of a treatment you could start this week means several more months without the health benefits that treatment provides.
For many patients, that wait is hard to justify medically. Obesity-related health risks do not pause while you wait for a more convenient format.
That said, there are situations where waiting could make sense:
- If needle anxiety is a genuine barrier that has prevented you from starting treatment, and you have discussed this with a doctor
- If you are not in a position to start treatment right now for other reasons, and the timeline works out naturally
The right answer is different for everyone. It is a conversation to have with your doctor, weighing up your health profile, your goals, and your preferences.
If you are currently on injectable Wegovy and wondering whether to switch to the pill when it becomes available, that is also a clinical conversation. The two formats contain the same medication, but switching mid-treatment involves practical considerations around dosing transitions that your doctor will need to manage.
How the Pill Differs from the Injection in Practice

The key practical differences:
- Injection: once a week, prefilled pen, store in fridge, takes a few seconds
- Pill: once daily, empty stomach, wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking, take with no more than 120ml of water
Some people will find the daily pill more convenient. Others will prefer the simplicity of injecting once a week and not thinking about it for seven days. Neither format is better - it is about what fits your life.
What About Mounjaro?
The Wegovy pill approval does not change anything about Mounjaro (tirzepatide). Mounjaro remains available in Ireland on private prescription and continues to show the highest average weight loss in clinical trials. Mounjaro works through a dual mechanism (GLP-1 and GIP), while Wegovy (in both formats) works through GLP-1 only.
If you are currently on Mounjaro and doing well, there is no clinical reason to consider switching. If you are deciding between treatments, the choice between Wegovy (injection or future pill) and Mounjaro is a clinical conversation with your doctor based on your individual health profile.
